The Natural Heritage Trust Fund has awarded over $319 million to 499 projects to help protect over 301,000 acres
of lands with outstanding natural and/or cultural heritage value. For some projects, the Natural Heritage Trust Fund
is the only funder. However, the best preservation of prime habitat lands is achieved with large tracts within
corridors and by using connectors to link separate tracts.
These large landscape macro-site projects require years to plan and strategically acquire and are only achieved
through a collaborative approach. Many of the conservation projects, big and small, would not be possible
without the dedicated participation of North Carolina’s Land Trusts and Land Conservation Organizations.
